We are a family business with 4 family members working in the business. Recently the ownership has moved to the second generation of the family. We have a team of loyal staff who we consider part of the Bromyard Glass family.
Starting in Bromyard in 1980, a then 30 year old decorator by the name of Bryan James realised that it was quite difficult to get hold of glass. Taking it upon himself, he set up shop in the King’s Arms’s yard. It took him 6 weeks to sell his first pane of glass but that got the ball rolling. Two years later, Bryan moved his operation to the Porthouse Industrial Estate in Bromyard and in 1983 began manufacturing Double Glazed Units.
In 1989 a move to Leominster was made thus creating the 30 year confusion in our location! In 1992 we moved to a purpose built location which we still occupy today. It was also during this time that the first additional family came on board. Bryan’s wife, Gill, joined on a six week trial working in the office. She has since become the Company Secretary and is the heart of the admin team, despite still insisting she is still on her 6 week trial!
In the year of the millennium, the first of the next generation joined the team. Ben took on the sales role and quickly learned everything there is to know about glass. If you have a question about glass, Ben is your man! A keen supporter of Hereford United in the early 2000’s, Ben ensured when we had a new building built for our automatic glass cutting table that “HUFC” would forever been carved into a brick high in the wall! That additional building also houses our processing department where we polish and drill your glass or mirrors.
In 2008, Bryan & Gill’s daughter Ellie joined the team. Initially taking on a sales role, she has also worked in the decorative glass department and is now part of the admin team. She is commonly found crawling under desks to fix the latest technical issue we have too!
Since 2002, we have had our double glazed units tested to the EN1279 standard every 6 months and in our last few tests we are very proud to have reached 100%! We make the best units possible and back that up with a 10 year guarantee.
Alongside our core business of manufacturing double glazed units quicker than anyone else in the county (at little as 15 minutes for emergency units and 2 days generally), we also cut glass and mirrors, polish their edges, drill holes, leaded work, resin work and supply everything you could possibly need to glaze the units yourself!
2019 saw us supply enough glass to cover 3 football pitches and we have regular customers as far north as Chester, west as Aberystwyth, as far south as Monmouth covering all of Herefordshire, Powys, Ceredigion, Shropshire and parts of Worcestershire and Gloucestershire. Our glass has ended up in France, Holland, Germany, USA and Canada.
We have always stood by the mantra that we would never produce or sell a product we wouldn’t use ourselves and that has stood the test of time! I’m sure Bryan never thought in those initial 6 weeks that the company would go on to become 40 years old!
